The Latte Site at Mochong, Rota, is magnificent and intriguing. This latte site is supposedly the only one in the Marianas that forms a wall-like base. This site is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.

As part of HPO’s extensive documentation and identification activities, it also has the responsibi-lity of determining if sites are highly significant, based on its uniqueness or its association with an historic event or person, and are eligible to be nominated for inclusion into the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the nation’s historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Preservation Act of 1966, it is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archaeological resources. The National Register is administered by the National Park Service under the Secretary of the Interior.

Properties listed in the National Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, and culture. These properties include all historic areas in the National Park System, National Historic Landmarks, and properties significant to the nation, state, or community which have been nominated by the State Historic Preservation Office and approved by the National Park Service.

The National Register helps preserve these significant historic places by recognizing this irreplaceable heritage. Its primary goals are to foster a national preservation ethic; promote a grater appreciation of America’s heritage; and increase and broaden the public’s understanding and appreciation of historic places.

Currently, the CNMI has 35 properties listed on the US National Register of Historic Places. These are sites recognized nationally as highly significant sites valued by CNMI residents for thier cultural value and importance. Grant assistance are availed to these sites through the federal government.
